Figuring out why your cat is urinating outside of the litter box is very important both for your co-existence and for the health of your cat.
More often than not, the reason behind your cat’s inappropriate urination can be narrowed down to 3 main instances:
- Your cat has a health concern (UTI, Arthritis, Kidney Disease, Hyperthyroidism, etc.) – This should be your FIRST acknowledgement. Take your cat to the vet and let them know what is going on so they can properly check your cat and rule out any health concerns.
- Litter Box Maintenance – Cats need a clean place to “do their business” please make sure you are keeping the litter box clean. That means scooping multiple times a day, washing the litter box out with soap and water at least every other week and replacing with clean fresh litter.
- Stress. This could be many things, and your cat will feed off of your energy, so if you’re going through something they are too.
It is very important to know that cats will not “go” outside of the litter box just to get back at you … there is a reason, and I always recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian first.
